GENDER
WALK
UK
FUNDED BY:
Tanio’s Gender Walk, in partnership with Plan UK, was an engaging, interactive artwork designed to explore and challenge societal expectations of gender expression. Part of a larger Plan UK project to work with international movement She Is Not Your Rehab, the Gender Walk was featured at Change the Story, a conference for policy makers and community leaders to understand the importance of education on gender expression and gender roles. Focussing on teaching children and young people that gender discrimination is never acceptable, the She Is Not Your Rehab movement and Change the Story aimed to empower people to express themselves however they see fit, and to encourage understanding and learning. The Gender Walk guided people through a large-scale art installation, where they saw representations of traditional gender stereotypes. They were able to interact with the installation to reflect on how it made them feel, and to work on creative solutions to dismantling gender expectations and broadening acceptance for people across the gender spectrum.
